What this business type is
An MOT centre is a DVSA-authorised test facility with one or more approved test lanes, each equipped for the class of vehicle tested (typically Class 4 for cars and light vans, or Class 7 for larger vans). The site holds an approved status and testers hold individual DVSA qualifications for the classes they are authorised to test.
Many MOT centres generate their main profit not from the test fee itself but from repair work identified during failed tests, so the commercial strength of the site often depends as much on its servicing and repair capability as on test throughput alone.
What buyers assess
- Number of test lanes, their class (4 and/or 7) and utilisation across the week
- Number and qualifications of DVSA-authorised testers, and whether testing capacity depends on one individual
- Test volumes and pass/fail ratios, and how much repair work is converted from failed tests
- Equipment condition and calibration history for brake testers, emissions equipment and other class-specific test equipment
- The process for renewing or re-approving the site's authorised status following a change of ownership, which buyers should confirm directly with DVSA rather than assume
- Whether the site trades solely as an MOT centre or combines testing with servicing and repair income
- Premises tenure and whether the layout and equipment meet current DVSA site requirements
What sellers should prepare
- DVSA site approval documentation and equipment calibration records
- Tester qualification certificates and a summary of tester numbers and authorised classes
- Test volume and pass/fail data for recent trading periods
- A breakdown of income between test fees and repair work generated from failed tests
- Equipment schedules showing ownership, age and any outstanding finance
- Confirmation of how the site's authorised status would be affected by a change of ownership, sought in good time from DVSA
Frequently asked questions
Does DVSA approval transfer automatically when an MOT centre is sold?
Site approval and tester authorisation are administered by DVSA and are not simply inherited by a new owner without the correct process being followed. Anyone buying or selling an MOT centre should contact DVSA directly, well before completion, to understand what needs to happen to the site's authorised status and to individual testers' qualifications as part of the transaction.
What happens if the main tester leaves after the business is sold?
Testing capacity is at risk if authorised testing depends on one person, which is why buyers ask about tester numbers, qualifications and the likelihood of the team staying on. A site with two or more independently qualified testers is generally viewed as lower risk than one reliant on a single tester, including the owner.
Is an MOT centre worth more than a general repair garage of the same size?
Not automatically. Test fees are fixed and modest, so the real commercial value usually comes from the repair work generated by failed tests and any additional servicing capacity on site, rather than from testing income alone. A buyer will look at the whole business, not just the presence of a test lane.
Do I need a separate Class 4 and Class 7 lane to attract buyers?
It depends on the local market. A Class 7 lane widens the customer base to light commercial vehicles and can be attractive where there is local demand from tradespeople and small fleets, but it is not essential and some highly profitable sites test cars only.
